LOHNER, TOBIAS. - Jesuit, writer on ascetics and pastoral theology, b. at Neu-Ottingen (Bavaria) on 13 March 1619, d. at Munich on 16 May 1697. For many years he was professor of philosophy, dogmatic and moral theology, rector of the Colleges of Lucerne and Dillingen, and master of novices.
Besides various small ascetical works on the different states of life, religious life, the excellence of the priesthood, and the value of tribulations, collected in Hausbibliothek (6 vols., Munich 1684-85) and widely circulated in his day, there still remain useful and esteemed today: the Instructissima bibliotheca manualis concionatoria (4 vols., Dillingen 1681), often reprinted in various countries and variously updated (latest ed., 5 vols., Paris 1880); and the Instructiones practicae, issued in series on various topics of utility for the priestly ministry and collected in 11 vols. (Dillingen 1726-28). The Instructio quinta: De confessionibus rite ac fructuose excipiendis, is on the Index (decree of 5 July 1728) perhaps for the reasons for which the Spanish Index ordered the deletion of certain litanies, every reference to the Thesaurus precum and the invocation to St. Carbonianus (Corbinian) presented in a litany (H. Reusch, Index der verbotenen Büchern, II, Bonn 1885, p. 78).
