LÖWENSTEIN, Karl Wertheim-Rosenberg, Prince of. - Sociologist, b. at Haid (Bohemia) on 21 May 1834, d. at Cologne on 8 Nov. 1921. At the age of 73, after the death of his second wife, he became a Dominican at Venlo (1918).

Profoundly religious and of an exquisite social sensibility, he placed himself at the disposal of the Catholic cause in Germany, cooperating with the Centre; resolving, during his five parliamentary terms, difficult political and social questions; giving, in his extensive estates, the example of a understanding and Christian master. To him is due the foundation of the abbey of St. Hildegard near Eibingen (Benedictines); and other convents and religious communities received from him the means for their foundation and subsistence.

But the most beautiful and effective work of his whole life was the organization of the Katholikentage, which he skillfully directed for 30 years, as commissioner. To which must be added the presidency of the Anti-Dueling League, which he called back to life, and the care lavished on the « Freie Vereinigung katholischen Sozialpolitiker ».
