Bzovius (Bzowski), Abraham

Italian original Cite

BZOVIUS (BZOWSKI), ABRAHAM. - Polish Dominican preacher, famous for his fiery oratory. Born at Proszowice in 1567, died in 1637 in Rome, where he spent many years of his life, kept there by Urban VIII, and where he was buried in the church of the Minerva. He was professor of theology at Ferrara and of philosophy at Milan, vicar at Warsaw, in whose surroundings he founded the college of Nove-Miasto (1603), and prior of Kraków and of Wrocław. He published various sermons and historical works, of which the principal one is the continuation of Baronio's Annales Ecclesiastici, in 9 vols., covering the years 1198 to 1572 (editions Rome 1616-72). This is certainly a work of great bulk, in which, however, true critical sense and careful study of the problems are lacking.
