BROUGHTON, RICHARD. - English Catholic priest and historian, b. at Great Stukeley (Huntingdonshire) around 1556, d. at Wood on 18 January 1635. He studied at Oxford, and then at Reims, where he was ordained a priest in 1593. Having returned to his homeland, he became archpriest, canon of the Chapter, vicar general of Richard Smith, bishop of Chalcedon, and vicar general of England.
His historical and apologetic works against the Protestants are numerous. We recall: Resolution of Religion (Antwerp 1601-1603); The Judgement of the Apostles (8 vols., Douai 1632); The Ecclesiastical Historie of Great Britaine (ibid. 1633); A true memorial (8 vols., London 1650); Monastichon Britannicum (8 vols., ibid. 1655), the latter two posthumous.
