BROUGHTON, RICHARD. - English Catholic priest and historiographer, b. at Great Stukeley (Huntingdonshire) about 1556, d. at Wood on 18 Jan. 1635. He studied at Oxford and then at Reims, where he was ordained priest in 1593. Having returned to his homeland, he became archpriest, canon of the Chapter, vicar general of the bishop of Chalcedon Riccardo Smith, and vicar general of England.

His historical and apologetic works against the Protestants are numerous. Worthy of mention are: Resolution of Religion (Antwerp 1601-1603); The Judgement of the Apostles (8 vols., Douai 1632); The Ecclesiastical Historie of Great Britaine (ibid. 1633); A true memorial (8 vols., London 1650); Monastichon Britannicum (8 vols., ibid. 1655), the latter two published posthumously.
