Calini, Muzio, Bishop

CALINI, MUZIO, bishop. - Born into a noble Brescian family in an unspecified year, he died at Terni (the city of which he was bishop) in April 1570. He received an excellent education according to the principles of Marc'Antonio Flaminio and Paolo Manuzio, and while still young was appointed secretary by Alvise Corner, archbishop of Zara and later cardinal, who took him with him to the island of Cyprus, of which he was grand prior. On 19 July 1555 Corner resigned the archbishopric of Zara in his favour, and in this capacity Calini took part in the Council of Trent, distinguishing himself greatly both through his participation in its work and as an orator. After the Council, before returning to Zara, he stayed in Rome, where he took part in the commissions for the reform of the Missal and Breviary and also in the first drafting of the Roman catechism. On 12 July 1566 he obtained transfer to the episcopal see of Terni, which he held for only three years and honoured through his piety and reforming activity.
