CALINI, Muzio, bishop. — Born into a noble Brescian family in an unspecified year, he died at Terni (of which city he was bishop) in April 1570. He received an excellent education under the guidance of Marc'Antonio Flaminio and Paolo Manuzio, and while still young was taken on as secretary by Alvise Corner, archbishop of Zara and later cardinal, who brought him along to the island of Cyprus, of which he was grand prior. On 19 July 1555 Corner resigned the archbishopric of Zara in his favour, and in this capacity he took part in the Council of Trent, distinguishing himself greatly both in his contributions to its work and as an orator. After the Council, before returning to Zara, he stayed in Rome where he took part in the commissions for the reform of the Missal and the Breviary and also in the drafting of the first version of the Roman Catechism. On 12 July 1566 he obtained a transfer to the episcopal see of Terni, which he held for only three years but honoured with his piety and reforming activity.
