CALINO, Cesare. — Jesuit and preacher, b. Brescia 14 Feb. 1670, d. Bologna 19 Aug. 1749. After several years of literary teaching at Faenza, Parma and Venice, he devoted himself effectively to preaching, especially at Bologna, where he remained for twenty-five years and for seven years expounded Holy Scripture.
Of his works (9 vols., Venice 1759), worthy of remembrance for their formative efficacy are his Lenten sermons; his Trattenimenti sopra i Santi Vangeli e gli Atti degli Apostoli; Il giovanetto Giuseppe proposto ai giovanetti studiosi, but above all his Le lezioni sacre e morali sul primo libro dei Re, in which the various historical events of Israel and the diverse characters of its figures provide him with the means to correct manners skilfully and to furnish maxims for a serious Christian education beneficial to society. The strong objections he raised against the historical value of Josephus provoked controversies that dragged on for a long time.
