CALINO, CESARE. - Jesuit and preacher, b. in Brescia on 14 Feb. 1670, d. in Bologna on 19 Aug. 1749. After several years of teaching literature at Faenza, Parma, and Venezia, he devoted himself effectively to preaching, especially at Bologna, where he remained for twenty-five years and for seven expounded Holy Scripture.
Among his works (9 vols., Venezia 1759), those deserving remembrance for their formative effectiveness are the Quaresimale; the Trattenimenti sopra i Santi Vangeli e gli Atti degli Apostoli; Il giovanetto Giuseppe proposto ai giovanetti studiosi, but above all Le lezioni sacre e morali sul primo libro dei Re, in which the various historical events of Israel and the differing characters of its figures afforded him the opportunity skillfully to correct morals and to provide maxims for a serious and socially beneficial Christian education. The forceful attacks he made upon the historical value of Giuseppe Flavio gave rise to controversies that continued for a long time.
