CACCIAGUERRA, BONSIGNORE. - Priest, b. in Siena in 1494, d. in Rome on 30 June 1566. Having gone, as a young man, to Palermo, he squandered in luxury and disorder the wealth accumulated through a fortunate business; but recalled to himself by apparitions of Jesus on the cross, by losses of property, by the revelation of his state of conscience made in public by a woman possessed, he sells everything, goes as a pilgrim to St. James of Compostela, and through various cities of Italy, until he settles in Rome, where he is ordained a priest (1547). With the support of St. Philip Neri he has himself admitted among the chaplains of St. Jerome of Charity; and he becomes a fervent but prudent apostle of frequent and even daily communion. He wrote: Trattato della comunione (Rome 1557, reprinted several times); Trattato della tribolazione (ibid. 1559), much recommended by St. Francis de Sales; Lettere spirituali (I, ibid. 1564; II, posthumous, 1575); Pie e devote meditazioni (ibid. 1583).
