CACCIAGUERRA, BONSIGNORE. - Priest, b. at Siena in 1494, d. at Rome on 30 June 1566. Having gone to Palermo as a young man, he squandered in luxury and dissipation the wealth accumulated through successful trade; but, brought back to himself by apparitions of Jesus on the cross, by losses of property, and by the revelation of the state of his conscience made publicly by a possessed woman, he sold everything, went as a pilgrim to S. Giacomo di Compostella, and through various cities of Italy, until he settled in Rome, where he was ordained priest (1547). With the support of s. Filippo Neri he was admitted among the chaplains of S. Gerolamo della Carità; and he became a fervent but prudent apostle of frequent and even daily communion. He wrote: Trattato della comunione (Rome 1557, reprinted several times); Trattato della tribolazione (ibid. 1559), highly recommended by s. Francesco di Sales; Lettere spirituali (I, ibid. 1564; II, posthumous, 1575); Pie e devote meditazioni (ibid. 1583).
