CALIGARI, GIOVANNI ANDREA. - Nuncio, b. at Brisighella on 14 Oct. 1527, d. at Bertinoro on 19 Jan. 1613. He was auditor of Cardinal Francesco Giovanni Commendone. In 1559 a referendary of the Signatura, he was sent as nuncio to Portugal (1574-77), then to Poland (1578-1581). During this mission, in 1579 he was appointed bishop of Bertinoro and was consecrated in Warsaw by the bishop of Wladislavia in the presence of the whole court. In 1584 he was appointed nuncio at Graz to Charles, archduke of Styria, and remained in Styria and the Gorizia region until 1587. Afterwards he was secretary to Urban VII, Gregory XIV and Clement VIII. In his functions as nuncio he was animated by great zeal for religious renewal, for the defense of Catholic interests, and for the implementation of the decrees of Trent.
