CALIGARI, GIOVANNI ANDREA. — Nuncio, born in Brisighella on 14 October 1527, died in Bertinoro on 19 January 1613. He was auditor to Cardinal Francesco Giovanni Commendone. In 1559, having become a referendary of the Segnatura, he was sent as nuncio to Portugal (1574–77), then to Poland (1578–1581). During this mission, in 1579 he was appointed bishop of Bertinoro and was consecrated in Warsaw by the bishop of Wladislavia in the presence of the entire court. In 1584 he was appointed nuncio at Graz to Charles, Archduke of Styria, and remained in Styria and the Goriziano until 1587. He was subsequently secretary to Urban VII, Gregory XIV, and Clement VIII. In his functions as nuncio, he was animated by great zeal for religious renewal, for the defense of Catholic interests, and for the implementation of the Tridentine decrees.
