CALIGARI, Giovanni Andrea. — Papal nuncio, born at Brisighella on 14 Oct. 1527, died at Bertinoro on 19 Jan. 1613. He served as auditor to Cardinal Francesco Giovanni Commendone. In 1559 he became a referendary of the Segnatura and was sent as nuncio to Portugal (1574–77), then to Poland (1578–81). During this mission, in 1579 he was appointed Bishop of Bertinoro and was consecrated at Warsaw by the Bishop of Włocławek in the presence of the entire court. In 1584 he was named nuncio to Graz at the court of Archduke Charles of Styria and remained in Styria and the Gorizia region until 1587. Thereafter he served as secretary to Urban VII, Gregory XIV, and Clement VIII. In his duties as nuncio, he was animated by great zeal for religious renewal, the defense of Catholic interests, and the implementation of the decrees of the Council of Trent.
