CAMAIANI, PIETRO. - Nuncio, b. at Arezzo on 1 June 1519, d. at Ascoli Piceno on 27 July 1579. He was a canon of Florence when, on 12 Feb. 1552, he was appointed bishop of Fiesole, whence, on 7 Oct. 1566, he was transferred to Ascoli Piceno. He was able, however, to devote little attention to the governance of the two dioceses, being occupied with the nunciatures entrusted to him. From 1552 to 1553 he was nuncio to the Emperor, then from 1554 to 1555 at Naples; from 1566 to 1567 he was Pius V’s extraordinary envoy to Philip II of Spain to negotiate concerning the disputes between Rome and Madrid, such as the disturbances in the Netherlands against Catholics, the controversies over ecclesiastical jurisdiction in the Kingdom of Naples, and the disagreements concerning the privilege of sovereignty in Sicily.
