CAMAIANI, PIETRO. - Nuncio; b. at Arezzo on 19 June 1519, d. at Ascoli Piceno on 27 July 1579. He was a canon of Florence when, on 12 Feb. 1552, he was named bishop of Fiesole, whence, on 7 Oct. 1566, he was transferred to Ascoli Piceno. Little, however, could he attend to the government of the two dioceses, being occupied as he was with the nunciatures entrusted to him. Indeed, from 1552 to 1553 he was nuncio to the Emperor; then from 1554 to 1555 at Naples; from 1566 to 1567 he was sent as extraordinary envoy by Pius V to Philip II of Spain to negotiate the disputes between Rome and Madrid, such as the disturbances in the Netherlands against Catholics, the controversies over ecclesiastical jurisdiction in the Kingdom of Naples, and the disagreements over the privilege of sovereignty in Sicily.
