CAMAIANI, PIETRO. - Nuncio, b. at Arezzo on 1 June 1519, d. at Ascoli Piceno on 27 July 1579. He was a canon of Florence when, on 12 Feb. 1552, he was appointed bishop of Fiesole, from where, on 7 Oct. 1566, he was transferred to Ascoli Piceno. He could, however, devote little attention to the governance of the two dioceses, occupied as he was in the nunciatures entrusted to him. In fact, from 1552 to 1553 he was nuncio to the Emperor, then from 1554 to 1555 at Naples; from 1566 to 1567 he was extraordinary envoy of Pius V to Philip II of Spain to negotiate the disputes between Rome and Madrid, such as the disturbances in the Netherlands against Catholics, the controversies over ecclesiastical jurisdiction in the Kingdom of Naples, and the disagreements over the privilege of sovereignty in Sicily.
