CIOCCHI DEL MONTE, ANTONIO MARIA. Cardinal, b. at Monte S. Savino in 1461, was auditor of the Camera and of the Rota, bishop of Città di Castello on 4 Aug. 1503, then archbishop of Siponto on 6 Feb. 1506 (until 1513). He was created cardinal by Julius II at Ravenna on 10 March 1511, chiefly on account of his juridical ability; in 1512 he was legate in Umbria; he took an important part in the Fifth Lateran Council (v. LATERANENSI PATTI, CONCILI). Clement VII left him as his legate in the City of Rome on 10 Oct. 1529 when he himself went to Bologna. He was bishop of Porto from 15 June 1524 until his death in the Curia on 20 Sept. 1533, and was buried in the church of S. Pietro in Montorio, where his nephew Julius III had a monument erected to him. At his instigation, Antonio da Sangallo built the sumptuous palaces of Monte S. Savino, Montepulciano and Rome.
