CIONI, Giovanni Battista, Venerable. - First member of the Clerics Regular of the Mother of God, b. in Lucca on 11 Nov. 1556, in the Cioni palace, third-born of the noble couple Francesco and Maddalena Bertolini; d. there on 31 March 1623.
From childhood he was most devoted to the Most Holy Eucharist. While frequenting, with his cousin C. Franciotti, the church of St. Romano of the Dominicans, he had there as his confessor Fr. Benedetto Onesti who, with his confreres Fr. Paolino (venerable) and Francesco Bernardini, instructed the young. He came to know St. John Leonardi (v.) and became his first associate when the latter founded (1574) the Congregation, later Order, of the Mother of God (v.). A priest in 1585, he moved with Leonardi and his companions from the house and church of St. Maria della Rosa to that of St. Maria Corteorlandini; he was rector of the church and then superior of the house. Most humble, he twice refused the office of superior general. When a small Congregation of priests was formed in Pescia through the work of St. John Leonardi and the venerable Antonio Paqui, Cioni, while remaining in Lucca, directed it for over 15
years. He assisted in the cares of the diocese (and there directed the seminary of St. Michele) the two prelates of Lucca Guidicioni. He is buried in St. Maria Corteorlandini.
His cause for beatification having been begun in 1701, the process for the declaration of his virtues in a heroic degree is now complete.
