CIPARISSIOTA, GIOVANNI. – Byzantine writer of the 14th century, also known by the title of “the Wise.” He left two celebrated works, one of which has remained almost entirely unpublished, namely the Traugressioni palamitiche (MS 1246 of Paris), published in part by Combéfis (Anctarium novissimum, II, 68–105; PG 152, 633–738). The Expositio elementaris eorum quae a theologis de Deo dicuntur was edited and translated by Turrianus (PG 152, 741–992), from a manuscript in Messina. C. argues with rare competence against the errors of Palamism (v. palamismo), of which he was one of the most effective opponents.
