CANBERRA-GOULBURN, Archdiocese of. - In Australia until 1948 the archdiocese of C.-G. was simply a diocese with its see at Goulburn. It was erected on 28 Nov. 1863 with territory taken from the archdiocese of Sydney and constituted a suffragan of the same. On 10 May 1887 it underwent a boundary adjustment, and in 1917 part of its territory was used to erect the diocese of Wagga-Wagga, while twelve parishes detached from the archdiocese of Sydney were assigned to II.
In 1948 the diocese was raised to the dignity of an archdiocese immediately subject to the Holy See, with its see at Canberra, the federal capital, and with the title of C.-G.
Its territory extends over 58,511 sq. km., with a Catholic population of 39,030 souls. Parishes: 36; churches: 147; diocesan priests: 87; religious: 19; brothers: 33; sisters: 421. In the primary schools there are 6,140 pupils and 1,550 in the secondary schools. There are 4 hospitals and various other charitable institutions (1948).
