CAVELLUS (Mac-Cauwell), Hugh. - Irish Scotist, b. at Down in 1571, d. 22 Sept. 1626. After completing his higher studies at the University of Salamanca, he taught theology at the Irish College in Louvain and at the convent of Aracoeli in Rome. Urban VIII preconized him archbishop of Armagh and primate of Ireland.
He collaborated with Wadding on the edition of the works of John Duns Scotus, contributing valuable annotations and numerous *scholia*. His principal work is: *Scoli commentarium in IV libros sententiarum* (Antwerp 1620).
