CAVENAGHI, LUIGI. – Painter, born in Caravaggio in 1844, died in Milan on 31 March 1918. A student at the Brera Academy, in the frescoes he executed in the Sanctuary of his native Caravaggio, in Milan, in Gallarate, and in Monza, he displayed the facile taste of the period, while nevertheless revealing talent and technical skill.
He subsequently devoted himself to the study of ancient paintings, and as a restorer he demonstrated passionate discernment. He was responsible for the restoration of the frescoes by Francia and Costa in the church of S. Cecilia in Bologna; of Luini’s in the Pellucca villa; of Bramante’s in the Panigarola house, later transferred to Brera; of Leonardo’s Last Supper; of Antonello’s triptych in the Museum of Messina; of the Annunciation by the same artist in the Museum of Syracuse; and of other masterpieces.
