CAVENAGHI, Luigi. – Painter, born in Caravaggio in 1844, died in Milan on 31 March 1918. A pupil at the Brera Academy, he displayed in the frescoes he executed in the Sanctuary of Caravaggio in Milan, in Gallarate, in Monza, the facile taste of the period, though revealing talent and technical skill.
He then turned to the study of ancient paintings, and as a restorer showed keen discernment. Among his restorations are those of the frescoes by Francia and Costa in the church of S. Cecilia in Bologna; of Luini in the Villa Pel
lucca; of Bramante in the Casa Panigarola, later transferred to Brera; of the Cenacolo by Leonardo; of the triptych by Antonello in the Museum of Messina; of the Annunciation by the same in the Museum of Syracuse, and of other masterpieces.
