Cavenaghi, Luigi

CAVENAGHI, LUIGI. - Painter, b. at Caravaggio in 1844, d. at Milan on 31 March 1918. A pupil at the Brera Academy, he displayed in the frescoes he executed in the Sanctuary of his native Caravaggio, in Milan, in Gallarate, and in Monza, the facile taste of the period, while still revealing talent and technical skill.

He later turned to the study of ancient paintings, and as a restorer he showed passionate acumen. To him are owed the restorations of the frescoes of Francia and Costa in the church of S. Cecilia in Bologna; of Luini in the villa Pellucca; of Bramante in the Casa Panigarola, later transferred to Brera; of Leonardo's Cenacolo; of Antonello's triptych in the Museum of Messina; of his Annunciation in the Museum of Syracuse, and of other masterpieces.
