CAROSELLI, ANGELO. – Painter, b. in Rome on 10 February 1585, d. there on 8 April 1652. The son of an antiques dealer, he tempered Caravaggesque innovations with the traditional Roman academic style of the sixteenth century.
He was for a long time in the workshop of the Perugian Agostino Tassi; for the Quirinal Palace he painted an S. Venessilio, later translated into mosaic for St Peter’s in the Vatican, a Pietà and two Prophets for the Chiesa Nuova, other canvases for S. Francesca romana, a Guardian Angel for Ferrara Cathedral, and a Singing Man, now in the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna. According to Passeri, he was also skilled in restoring and cleaning ancient paintings, for which he seems to have possessed many secrets.
