Caroselli, Angelo

CAROSELLI, ANGELO. - Painter, b. in Rome on 10 Feb. 1585, d. there on 8 Apr. 1652. Son of an antiquarian, he tempered Caravaggesque innovations with the traditional sixteenth-century Roman academic style.

He spent a long time in the workshop of Agostino Tassi of Perugia; he painted for the Palazzo del Quirinale a St. Venessilius, later translated into mosaic for St. Peter's in the Vatican, a Pietà and two Prophets for the Chiesa Nuova, other canvases for S. Francesca romana, a Guardian Angel for the cathedral of Ferrara, and a Man Singing, today in the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna. According to Passeri, he was also skilled in the restoration and cleaning of ancient paintings, for which he seems to have possessed many secrets.
