PANIGAROLA, FRANCESCO. - Orator and controversialist of the Order of Observant Friars Minor, b. in Milan on 6 Jan. 1548, d. at Asti on 31 May 1594.
Of a wealthy family, he studied law at Pavia and Bologna; in 1567 he took the Franciscan habit at Florence; at Padua, Pisa and Paris he went on to philosophical and theological studies. In 1573 he began an intense and highly celebrated activity as a preacher throughout Italy, which did not prevent him from attending to the duties of custos of the province of Milan and definitor general of his Order. St. Charles Borromeo sent him in 1583 to Rhaetia to combat there the spread of the Protestant Reformation; Sixtus V appointed him in 1586 bishop of Grisopolis and suffragan of the bishop of Ferrara, the following year entrusted him with the diocese of Asti and shortly afterwards sent him to Paris to assist the cardinal legate Arrigo Gaetano in his work of supporting the League against Henry IV, which lasted until 1590.
Such activity did not prevent P. from composing numerous works, besides those of sacred eloquence, of theological and philosophical polemic, and together with them some historical memoirs on the events he had occasion to witness, and a compendium of the first book of the Annales ecclesiastici of Cesare Baronio (Rome 1590).
