PANIZZI, DOMENICO. - Journalist and poet, b. at Reggio Emilia on 3 July 1839, d. there on 16 Feb. 1896. Having left his military career in the Austrian army in 1869, he returned to Italy and devoted himself to Catholic journalism.
He contributed extensively to the Genio cattolico, the Veridico, the Leonardo da Vinci, the Diritto cattolico, the Foglietto di Vicenza, Verona fedele, the Operaio cattolico, and many others. He was also a prolific poet of agreeable inspiration. Among other works, he published: Due fiori d'autunno... (Reggio Emilia 1869); L'armi e l'arpa (there 1871); La Gazzetta d'Italia e il Genio cattolico, a Pio IX pontifice e re (there 1871); Legnano (there 1876); Trent'anni di pontificato di Pio IX (there 1876); A Pio IX il bardo cattolico (Milan 1880); and translations from German and French (of Schiller, Goethe, Wieland, Bolanden, Hahn-Hahn, etc.). He was esteemed and loved by Pio IX for his fidelity to the person and directives of the pontiff.
