PANIZZI, DOMENICO. - Publicist and poet, b. at Reggio Emilia on 3 July 1839, d. there on 16 Feb. 1896. Having left in 1869 his military career in the Austrian army, he returned to Italy and devoted himself to Catholic journalism.
He collaborated intensively with the Genio cattolico, the Veridico, the Leonardo da Vinci, the Diritto cattolico, the Foglietto di Vicenza, Verona fedele, the Operaio cattolico and many others. He was also a prolific poet of a pleasing vein. He published among other things: Due fiori d'autunno... (Reggio Emilia 1869); L'armi e l'arpa (ibid. 1871); La Gazzetta d'Italia and the Genio cattolico, to Pius IX pontiff and king (ibid. 1871); Legnano (ibid. 1876); Trent'anni di pontificato di Pio IX (ibid. 1876); A Pio IX il bardo cattolico (Milan 1880); and translations from German and French (of Schiller, Goethe, Wieland, Bolanden, Hahn-Hahn, etc.). He was esteemed and loved by Pius IX for his fidelity to the person and to the pontifical directives.
