PANIZZI, Domenico. - Publicist and poet, b. Reggio Emilia, 3 July 1839, d. there, 16 Feb. 1896. Having left in 1869 his military career in the Austrian army, he returned to Italy and devoted himself to Catholic journalism.
He collaborated intensively with Il Genio cattolico, Il Veridico, Il Leonardo da Vinci, Il Diritto cattolico, Il Folgretto of Vicenza, Verona fedele, L’Operaio cattolico, and many others. He was also a prolific and agreeable poet. Among his publications are: Due fiori d’autunno… (Reggio Emilia 1869); L’armi e l’arma (ibid. 1871); La Gazzetta d’Italia e il Genio cattolico, a Pio IX pontefice e re (ibid. 1871); Legnano (ibid. 1876); Trent’anni di pontificato di Pio IX (ibid. 1876); A Pio IX il bardo cattolico (Milan 1880); and translations from German and French (of Schiller, Goethe, Wieland, Bolanden, Hahn-Hahn, etc.). He was esteemed and beloved by Pius IX for his loyalty to the person and directives of the Pontiff.
