PÂQUET, LOUIS-ADOLPHE. - Theologian and canonist, b. at St-Nicolas de Levis (Québec) on 4 Aug. 1859, d. at Québec in 1943.
Having obtained his degree in theology in 1883 following a public disputation held in the Vatican in the presence of Leone XIII, he was professor of theological subjects at the Seminary of Québec and, from 1903, dean of the Faculty of Theology at Laval University. In 1905-1906 he was the procurator in Rome of the bishops of the province of Québec. In 1909 he was delegate of the same province to the Canadian Plenary Council and was entrusted with drafting the schemas. In 1926 he organized and directed the Higher School of Philosophy. A fervent advocate of Thomism, he was a member of the Roman Academy of S. Tommaso d'Aquino and first president of the Canadian one (1929). He was also a sociologist, professor of ecclesiastical public law at Laval University, founder of the School of Social Sciences and of the Social Weeks of Canada. He carried out an intense intellectual apostolate and tenaciously upheld French religious, cultural, and linguistic traditions. He was an apostolic protonotary ad instar and honorary vicar general.
