PAQUET, LOUIS-ADOLPHE. - Theologian and canonist, b. at St-Nicolas de Levis (Quebec) on 4 Aug. 1859, d. at Quebec in 1943.
Having obtained his degree in theology in 1883 following a public disputation held in the Vatican in the presence of Leo XIII, he was professor of theological subjects at the Seminary of Quebec and from 1903 dean of the Faculty of Theology at Laval University. In 1905-1906 he was procurator in Rome of the bishops of the province of Quebec. In 1909 he was delegate of the same province to the Plenary Council of Canada and was charged with drafting the schemata. In 1926 he organized and directed the Higher School of Philosophy. An ardent champion of Thomism, he was a member of the Roman Academy of St. Thomas Aquinas and first president of the Canadian one (1929). He was also a sociologist, professor of public ecclesiastical law at Laval University, founder of the School of Social Sciences and of the Social Weeks of Canada. He carried on an intense intellectual apostolate and tenaciously upheld French religious, cultural and linguistic traditions. He was protonotary apostolic ad instar and honorary vicar general.
