GUIDO PANZIROLI. Jurist, born in Reggio Emilia on 17 April 1523, died in Padua on 17 May 1599.
He began the study of law under his father Alberto, then attended the University of Ferrara where he studied under Prospero Pasetti and Ippolito Riminaldi. Later he went to the school of the Alcati in Pavia, then to Bologna and finally to Padua, where in 1547 he was entrusted with the second extraordinary chair of Institutions. In 1554, having obtained his degree, he was promoted to the first ordinary chair of Institutions and two years later to the second ordinary chair of civil law, which he held until 1570. After the death of Simone Cravetta in Turin, Duke Emanuele Filiberto called him to the first ordinary chair of civil law; when he became ill with an eye ailment, he returned to Padua (1582), where he held the first chair of civil law and had as his pupil Francis de Sales. He remained there until his death, having declined invitations from Gregory XIV and Clement VIII to move to Rome.
Among his many works, the principal ones are: Notitia dignitatum utriusque imperii cum commentariis (Venice 1593, Lyons 1608, Geneva 1623) and De claris legum interpretibus libri IV (Venice 1637, Frankfurt 1721), in which are contained numerous notices on Roman jurists and on medieval civil and canon lawyers.
