Panziroli, Guido

PANZIROLI, GUIDO. - Jurist, b. at Reggio Emilia on 17 April 1523, d. at Padua on 17 May 1599.

Initiated into the study of law by his father Alberto, he followed the lectures of Prospero Passetti and Ippolito Riminaldi at the University of Ferrara; subsequently he attended the school of Alciati at Pavia, at Bologna and finally at Padua, where in 1547 he received the appointment of the "second extraordinary chair of Institutes." In 1554, having obtained his degree, he was promoted to the first ordinary chair of Institutes and two years later to the "second ordinary chair of civil law," which he held until 1570. On the death at Turin of Simone Cravetta, Duke Emmanuel Philibert called him to the first ordinary chair of civil laws; having fallen ill with his eyes, he returned to Padua (1582), where he held the first chair of civil law and had as his disciple St. Francis de Sales. Here he remained until his death, having refused the invitation of Gregory XIV and Clement VIII to move to Rome.

Among his many works the principal ones are: Notitia dignitatum utriusque imperii cum commentariis (Venice 1593, Lyon 1608, Geneva 1623) and De claris legum interpretibus libri IV* (Venice 1637, Frankfurt 1721), in which are contained numerous notices on the Roman jurists and on the medieval civilists and canonists.
