PANZIROLI, GUIDO. — Jurist, born in Reggio Emilia on 17 April 1523, died in Padua on 17 May 1599.
Initiated into the study of law by his father Alberto, he attended at the University of Ferrara the lectures of Prospero Passetti and Ippolito Riminaldi; subsequently he studied at Alciati’s school in Pavia, Bologna, and finally Padua, where in 1547 he was appointed to the «second extraordinary school of Institutes». In 1554, having obtained his degree, he was promoted to the first ordinary chair of Institutes and two years later to the «second ordinary chair of civil law», which he held until 1570. When Simone Cravetta died in Turin, Duke Emanuele Filiberto appointed him to the first ordinary chair of civil law; after falling ill in his eyes, he returned to Padua (1582), where he held the first chair of civil law and had s. Francesco di Sales as a pupil. He remained there until his death, having declined the invitation of Gregorio XIV and Clemente VIII to move to Rome.
Among his many works, the principal ones are: Notitia dignitatum utriusque imperii cum commentariis (Venice 1593, Lyon 1608, Geneva 1623) and De claris legum in-
terpretibus libri IV (Venice 1637, Frankfurt 1721), which contain numerous details about Roman jurists and medieval civil and canon lawyers.
