CAVELLUS (MAC-CAUGWELL), UGO. – Irish Scotist Franciscan, born in Down in 1571, died on 22 September 1626. Having completed his higher studies at the University of Salamanca, he taught theology at the Irish College in Louvain and at the Aracoeli convent in Rome. Urban VIII nominated him archbishop of Armagh and primate of Ireland.
He collaborated with Wadding on the edition of the works of Giovanni Duns Scoto, making a valuable contribution through his annotations and numerous “scholia.” His principal work is: Scoti commentarium in IV libros sententiarum (Antwerp 1620).
