**CETURA (Hebrew *Qētūrāli*).** — Abraham’s second wife (Gen. 25:1), probably a Canaanite, whom he is said to have married after Sarah’s death. Since, however, he would then have been about 140 years old, while the sacred writer attributes his amazement at her fertility to his being 100 (*ibid.* 17:17), and since little time would remain for the birth and upbringing of children, some hold that the union with C. preceded Sarah’s death.
By Abraham she bore six sons (*ibid.* 25:2), founders of as many tribes, including the Midianites. Before his death Abraham sent them all away, with gifts, from the land destined solely for Isaac, the heir of the divine promises; and they went, in accordance with the orders received, to dwell toward the east (*ibid.* 25:6). Thus Abraham secured undisputed dominion for Isaac and his descendants over their territory and also shielded them from dangerous contacts that might have led to moral and religious corruption.
