CICOCCHI DEL MONTE, ANTONIO MARIA. - Cardinal, b. at Monte S. Savino in 1461, he was auditor of the Camera and of the Rota, bishop of Città di Castello on 4 Aug. 1503, then archbishop of Siponto on 6 Feb. 1506 (until 1513). He was created cardinal by Julius II at Ravenna on 10 March 1511, chiefly thanks to his ability as a jurist; in 1512 he was legate in Umbria; he played an important part in the Lateran Council (v. LATERACRENSI, CONCILI). Clement VII left him as his legatus in Urbe on 1 Oct. 1529 when he departed for Bologna. He had been bishop of Porto since 15 June 1524 when he died in the curia on 20 Sept. 1533, and was buried in the church of S. Pietro in Montorio, where his nephew Julius III had a monument erected to him. At his initiative Antonio da Sangallo built the sumptuous palaces of Monte S. Savino, Montepulciano, and Rome.
