CLEMENT, KARL. - Protestant, historian of religions, born at Sommerfeld (Leipzig) in 1865, died on 8 July 1940 at Bonn, where he was professor of his discipline.
Principal works: *Religionsgeschichtliche Erklärung des Neuen Testaments* (1909); *Der Einfluss der Mysterienerklärung auf das älteste Christentum* (1913), both anti-syncretistic and anti-evolutionist with regard to the origins of Christianity; *Fontes historiae religionum ex auctoribus graecis et latinis collecti* (Berlin, from 1920); seven volumes have appeared to date, devoted to religions: I Persian, II Egyptian, III Germanic, IV Slavic, V Celtic, VI Primitive pre-Indo-European and Indo-European, VII Indian; of these, C. edited vols. I, III and VI; *Religionsgeschichte Europas* (2 vols., 1926, 1932); *Die Religionen der Erde* (Munich 1927), in collective collaboration (French trans. 1930); *Urgeschichtliche Religion* (2 vols., Bonn 1932); *Die Religion der Erträger* (ibid. 1932); *Altgermanische Religionsgeschichte* (ibid. 1934).
