CLEMENT, CHARLES. - Benedictine of Saint-Maur, born at Painblanc in 1703, died on 4 April 1778 in Paris. He collaborated on the *Histoire littéraire de la France* (vols. X and XII), completed the work of Dom Maur Dantine (or D'Antoine), *L'art de vérifier les dates* (2 vols., Paris 1750), and wrote a *Histoire générale de Port-Royal depuis la réforme de l'abbaye jusqu'à son entière destruction* (10 vols., Amsterdam 1755-57). He edited, with the help of his fellow monks, the works of St Gregory Nazianzen (Paris 1778; reproduced in *PG* 20 and 21). He left numerous minor writings. He was a Jansenist.
