CLEMENS, FRANZ JAKOB. - German theologian, b. in Koblenz on 4 Oct. 1815, d. in Rome on 24 Feb. 1862. After completing his studies, he traveled through Germany and Italy, acquiring a solid culture; from 1843 to '56 he was a lecturer at the University of Bonn, then professor of theology (although a layman) at Münster, where he was much listened to and appreciated by his students for his method, his depth, and the sureness of his doctrine.
Having fallen ill, he sought relief in the regions of southern Europe, but too soon he passed away in Rome. He was buried near the tomb of St. Ignatius, truly worthy to rest beside the apostle of orthodoxy, he who had fought in his favor all his life, especially in his limpid writings: Die speculative Theologie A. Günthers (Cologne 1853; a close confutation of the Güntherian system, which provoked the response of Günther's followers: Baltzer (v.), Knoodt). C. retorted with brio in the short work: De scholasticorum sententia philosophiam esse ancillam theologiae (Münster 1856), in which the relations of philosophy with theology are masterfully outlined. In defense of his position he then carried on a lively polemic with Kuhn (v). A man of holy life, he promoted the spread of the Conferences of St. Vincent.
