CLÉMENCET, CHARLES. — Maurist Benedictine, born at Painblanc in 1703, died on 4 April 1778 in Paris.
He collaborated on the Histoire littér. de la France (vols. X and XI), completed the work of dom Maur Dantine (or D’Antine), L’art de vérifier les dates (2 vols., Paris 1750), and wrote a Histoire génère. de Port Royal depuis la réforme de l’abbaye jusqu’à son entière destruction (10 vols., Amsterdam 1755–57). With the assistance of his confrères, he edited the works of s. Gregorio Nazianzeno (Paris 1778; reproduced in PG 20 and 21). He left numerous minor writings. He was pro-Jansenist.
