CROTINI di COSTIGLIOLE, EDOARDO. - A politician, born on 20 Oct. 1799 at Costigliole, died at Aosta on 25 Sept. 1870. Having devoted himself to a military career, he distinguished himself in suppressing the Piedmontese uprisings of 1821, and later served as secretary to the embassy in Paris (1837), where he vigorously opposed France’s early designs on Nice and Savoy, and subsequently as ambassador to Switzerland (1848).
He energetically opposed the approval of the law that sought to conscript future ministers of worship (1868), and on 20 Aug. 1870 abstained from voting on Pisanelli’s motion of confidence in the government’s political address, in order to “resolve the Roman Question in accordance with national aspirations.” Almost on the eve of his death, on 4 Sept. of the same year, in the face of plots aimed at provoking bloody uprisings in Rome, he addressed a noble letter of protest to President Lanza.
