The second edition (Venezia 1623) served as a model for other nations as well; in the third (3 vols., Firenze 1648-91) many additions are notable, which were later reproduced in the fourth edition (ibid., 1729-1738). In 1783 Grand Duke Pietro Leopoldo suppressed the C., merging it into a single society with other Florentine academies. It was revived in 1811, by decree of Napoleone, as an independent body, composed of 12 resident and 20 corresponding members. The fifth edition of the Vocabolario was begun in 1842; but in 1923 it was still at the letter O. In that same year the constitution and composition of the Accademia were altered: the publication of the Vocabolario was suspended, and replaced by a series of critically edited texts and documents and a periodical bulletin of Italian philology. Under this new program there have so far been published the Testi fiorentini del Duecento edited by A. Schiaffini (Firenze 1926), the critical editions of the Teseida edited by S. Battaglia (ibid. 1938) and of the Amorose visione edited by V. Branca (ibid. 1944), in addition to 7 large fascicles of the Studi di filologia italiana (ibid. 1927-46). It is the merit of the C. to have contributed, even while drawing blame for its intransigence, to the preservation of the unity and purity of the Italian idiomatic organism.
