EGBERTO. - Benedictine, archbishop of York (England), where he died on 19 Nov. 766. He was a cousin of the king of Northumbria, Ceovulfo; as a young man he went to Rome, where he was introduced to Roman customs and ordained deacon. Upon returning to his homeland, he was appointed bishop of York (732), where he undertook the work of ecclesiastical reform. In 735 he obtained the pallium from Rome,
