EGBERT, Saint. - Benedictine, perhaps a bishop, b. in 639 to a noble family in Northumbria (England), d. at the age of ninety on 24 April 729 on the island of Iona. As a young man he attended the monastic schools in Ireland, and was a monk at Rathmelsigi (perhaps Mellifont in County Louth). He made a vow to preach the Gospel to the Germanic peoples, but, prevented by a shipwreck, he sent St. Willibrord in his place. In 726 he induced the monks of the monastery of Iona to adopt the Roman rite. There he spent the last 13 years of his life. The Martyrologium Romanum commemorates him on 24 April.
