EGBERTO, saint. — Benedictine, perhaps a bishop, born in 639 to a noble family in Northumbria (England), died at the age of ninety on 24 April 729 on the island of Jona. As a young man he attended the monastic schools in Ireland and was a monk at Rathmelsigi (perhaps Mellifont in the county of Louth). He vowed to preach the Gospel to the Germanic peoples, but, prevented by a shipwreck, he sent St. Vilibrordo there. In 726 he persuaded the monks of the monastery of Jona to adopt the Roman rite. He spent the last thirteen years of his life there. ■ Martyrologium Romanum commemorates him on 24 April.
