HENRY OF FRENAR. – Augustinian historian and theologian, b. at Fremel, a small village in Thuringia, c. 1534, d. at the age of eighty in 1334. From his earliest youth he belonged to the Order of St Augustine. He studied at the Sorbonne and became renowned for his writings in philosophy and theology. He was also active in biblical, ascetical and mystical studies. He was a religious of exemplary life, esteemed and loved by all his subjects.
His fame is chiefly bound up with a small work he wrote on the history of the Augustinians, by which he exercised a great influence on later historians who dealt with the affairs of the Order, especially for the period in which F. lived.
