HENRY OF UPPSALA, St. — Martyr in Finland, of whom he is proclaimed the apostle and patron, in 1156. A native of England, he went to Sweden where in 1152 he was consecrated bishop of Uppsala.
He was in close relation with the holy king Henry of Sweden and in 1155 he joined him in the crusade undertaken against the Finns and pagans. Among the conquered Finns King Henry immediately had the religion preached, obtaining many conversions; and E. devoted himself to the care of the neophytes. But on 20 Jan. of the following year he fell victim to his zeal. He was canonized by Adrian IV in 1158. Feast on 19 Jan.
