HENRY OF VELDEKE. - German poet, of Flemish origin (second half of the 12th century), important for the lyric poetry in which he remains the founder of courtly poetry (which he subjected entirely to the rules of art), but more so for an Eneit ("Aeneid"), derived not from Virgil, but from a French elaboration (Roman d'Enéas). Since the material was here adapted to the spirit of the age of chivalry, not a little of French culture and taste was transfused into Germany, where he thus provided the classic model of the courtly chivalric epic. He had previously (1170-80) carried out a revival of the Legend of St. Servatius.
