ENRICO di UPPSALA, saint. – Martyr in Finland, of which he is proclaimed the apostle and patron, in 1156. Originally from England, he went to Sweden, where in 1152 he was consecrated bishop of Uppsala.
He was on intimate terms with the holy king Enrico of Sweden and in 1155 joined him in the crusade undertaken against the pagan Finns. Among the defeated Finns, King Enrico immediately had the religion preached, obtaining many conversions; and E. devoted himself to the care of the neophytes. But on 20 January of the following year he fell victim to his zeal. He was canonized by Adrian IV in 1158. Feast day: 19 January.
