ELIZABETH, Queen of Portugal, Saint. - Daughter of Peter III of Aragon and of Constance, granddaughter of the emperor Frederick II, related by kinship to St. Elizabeth of Hungary, b. in 1271, d. at Estremoz on 4 July 1336; scarcely twelve years old, she was sought in marriage by the hereditary princes of England and of Naples, but King Denis of Portugal was preferred. She was distinguished for a great charity toward the poor and the sick, sometimes repaid by God with extraordinary prodigies. After the death of King Denis in 1325, she withdrew to private life, taking the habit of the Franciscan Third Order. She died after a long and arduous journey to Estremoz, undertaken to reconcile her son Alfonso IV with her grandson Alfonso XI of Castile. Canonized by Urban VIII in 1625, her feast is celebrated on 8 July.
