ALFONSO XI, king of CASTILE and LEÓN. — Born in 1311, died in 1350. He was called the Justiciar because of his terrible vengeance against his enemies, but his passion for Eleonora di Guzmán and for his illegitimate children brought discord to the kingdom. He was highly successful in the war against the Moors, over whom he won the victory of Salado, a mortal blow to Islam (1340).
