AESCHYLUS OF LUND. - Born ca. 1100, died at Clairvaux on 25 Aug. 1181; in 1134 he was made bishop of Roskilde, then in 1138 of the archdiocese of Lund. In 1152 Cardinal Nicholas Breakspear provisionally subjected the Swedish bishoprics to his jurisdiction. In 1156 he went down to Rome to obtain confirmation of the privilege. On his return he was captured in German territory, with the consent of Emperor Frederick I. An assertor of Danish independence, he wrote from captivity that he preferred to suffer for his people rather than to rule among them. In 1177 he retired to Clairvaux, where he died in the reputation of sanctity.
