ESCHILO di LUND. - B. ca. 1100, d. at Chiaravalle on 25 Aug. 1181; in 1134 he was made bishop of Roskilde, and then, in 1138, of the archdiocese of Lund. In 1152 Cardinal Niccolò Anglico provisionally placed the Swedish bishoprics under his jurisdiction. In 1156 he went down to Rome to obtain confirmation of the privilege. An advocate of Danish independence, he wrote from captivity that he preferred to suffer for his own people rather than rule among strangers. In 1177 he withdrew to Chiaravalle, where he died in a reputation for holiness.
