ETELVOLDO, saint. - Bishop of Winchester, b. c. 908, d. 1 Aug. 984. At first a monk at Glastonbury under St Dunstan, c. 954, at the wish of King Edred, he was made abbot of the monastery of Abingdon, where he caused religious discipline to flourish anew. In 963 he was elected bishop of Winchester and was consecrated by St Dunstan, with whom he collaborated in reforming the declining ecclesiastical discipline, especially by rebuilding churches and monasteries devastated by the frequent Danish incursions, and through the education of youth, supported by King Edgar, with whom he was on intimate terms.

A splendid Benedictional (liturgical book), written by his order while he was bishop of Winchester, has been preserved (cf. DACL, II, cols. 735-39).
