ENRÍQUEZ, HENRY. - Cardinal, Neapolitan nobleman of the princes of Squinzano, b. at Campi (Lecce) on 30 Sept. 1701, d. at Ravenna on 25 Apr. 1756. In his youth he embraced the ecclesiastical state. Most prudent and disinterested in affairs, of great spirit, an enemy of idleness and slowness, he was dear to all, most useful in his offices, a patron of men of letters.

Benedict XIII appointed him governor of Macerata and San Marino; Clement XII made him governor of Frosinone (1734); Benedict XIV sent him as nuncio to the court of Madrid and 10 years later, on 26 Nov. 1753, created him cardinal priest of St. Eusebius and legate of Ravenna.

Famous is his version in the Italian language of the work De imitatione Christi, to which he added many notes and prayers. An excellent edition of this translation, with the reflections of Lamennais (v.) added, was produced in Venice in 1840 by the Emiliana printing house.
