GABRIEL OF VENICE. - Camaldolese hermit of the Congregation of Monte Corona, born into the Bianchi family in Venice in the early years of the 1700s, died in 1764. Having entered among the Camaldolese Hermits, he spent his whole life in Venice in the solitude of S. Clemente, devoted to prayer and study.

He published: Il martirio del divino amore, conforme la dottrina di s. Giovanni della Croce, per uso dei direttori di spirito (Venice 1740); Osservazioni storico-morali sul Vecchio Testamento (ibid. 1758, 3 vols. preceded by a learned preface); Osservazioni storico-morali sul Nuovo Testamento (ibid. 1760); Vita del reale profeta Davide (ibid. 1762). In the first work, which is perhaps the most widely circulated, the author sets out the doctrine of the two nights of St. John of the Cross, confirming it with abundant quotations drawn from the Holy Fathers and the most celebrated mystical writers.
