GAETANO MARIA da BERGAMO. – Capuchin moral-ascetical theologian of the ancient province of Brescia, in the world Marco Migliorini, born on 25 February 1672, died on 10 September 1753. Having completed his studies of law in his native city, on 3 May 1691 he entered the Capuchins at Trenzano (Brescia). From 1695 to 1702 he studied philosophy, theology, Sacred Scripture, and patristics. For approximately 40 years he preached zealously in many regions. He then withdrew in order to devote himself more deliberately to the apostolate of the pen, which he began around the age of 50; over 30 years he wrote approximately 40 works, some of which went through numerous translations and editions.
Opera omnia, Rome 1776–80 in 12 vols.; Monza–Milan 1812–76 in 33 booklets. G.’s principal works remain useful even today.
