GALLERANI, Andrea, Blessed. - Son of Ghezzolino, a Sienese nobleman, born toward the end of the 12th century, died on 19 March 1251. He was first a valiant soldier in his homeland; then, for having killed a blasphemer, he went into exile. Having returned to his homeland after some time, he consecrated himself entirely to prayer and works of charity, founding in Siena the "House of St. M. of Mercy for the Sienese poor" (which remained until 1408) and a "Company of pious persons for the service of the sick." His holiness was illustrated by numerous prodigies, and the Blessed Virgin saved him several times from the snares of certain enemies. He was buried in the church of the Dominicans. He never enjoyed public cult, and it is not certain that he belonged to the Humiliati, although he is catalogued among the saints of this Order.
