GALLERANI, ANDREA, blessed. - Son of Ghezzolino, a Sienese nobleman, born toward the end of the 12th century, died on 19 March 1251. He was first a valiant soldier in his native city; then, having killed a blasphemer, he went into exile. Having returned to his native city after some time, he devoted himself entirely to prayer and works of charity, founding in Siena the “House of S. M. of Mercy for the poor of Siena” (which remained until 1408) and a “Company of pious persons for the service of the sick.” His holiness was illustrated by numerous prodigies, and the Blessed Virgin saved him several times from the snares of certain enemies. He was buried in the church of the Dominicans. He never enjoyed public cult, and it is not certain that he belonged to the Umiliati, although he was listed among the saints of this Order.
