EUSEBIUS, Saint. - In the Jeronymian Martyrology there is commemorated on Aug. 14 a certain E., founder of the titular church of the same name on the Esquiline. The Gregorian Sacramentary and the Gelasian Sacramentary of the 8th century remember him as confessor and priest, whereas the present Roman Missal makes him a martyr.
At the beginning of the 6th century, when in Rome the confusion and reversal of positions between Pope Liberius and the antipope Felix II (v.) took place, a certain Orosius, self-styled relative of E. and eyewitness, wrote a Passio according to which E., not wishing to communicate with Pope Liberius after his adherence to the Arian heresy, gathered the faithful in his house. He was therefore summoned, at the instigation of Liberius, before the tribunal of the emperor Constantius II, who had him shut up in a narrow room of his own house, where he died on Aug. 14 after seven months of imprisonment. He was buried in the cemetery of Callistus near the tomb of Pope Sixtus, where an inscription was also placed. Neither the tomb nor the inscription, however much sought, were ever found. The first certain mention of the titulus E. is from 474, but in all probability it must go back to an earlier time; at the end of the 6th century (593), as in other similar cases, it is by then transformed into the titulus A. E.
