EULALIUS, Antipope. - On the death of Zosimus, which occurred on 27 Dec. 418, the Roman deacons seized the Lateran basilica, preventing the rest of the clergy from entering, and elected their leader E. as pontiff. But the priests assembled in another church elected Boniface. Both were consecrated on the following Sunday, 29 Dec. Each of the contenders considered himself the legitimate pope, whence conflicts and struggles that disturbed the public tranquility.
E., supported by the prefect Symmachus, at first also enjoyed imperial favor; but when the party of Boniface succeeded in making known to the Emperor the true state of affairs, a council was convened at Ravenna for the following February, at which it was decided that both contenders should be removed from Rome. Boniface obeyed, but E., supported by his partisans, attempted during the Easter festivities to seize the Lateran; he was removed by force and placed under guard. This deprived him of imperial favor, since Honorius declared him to have forfeited the right to the pontificate (414), recognizing Boniface as the legitimate pontiff, who shortly afterward was received in Rome with joyful acclamations. E. was relegated to Campania, where he died in obscurity.
