ACHILLEO, Bishop of Spoleto. - He was chosen by the imperial court of Ravenna in 419 to perform the paschal functions at Rome, which at that moment was without its bishop, since Boniface I and his rival Eulalius had been removed from it (cf. Avellana Collectio, letters 21, 22 [to A.], 23, 24, 29, 31, 32 of 15, 23, 26, 29 March 419; ed. O. Günther, in CSEL 35, 1, Vienna 1895, pp. 68-71, 74-79).
G. B. De Rossi attributes to him, with good grounds, 4 epigrams preserved, without any topographical indication, in the epigraphic collection of Centulo (poems 10-12, incomplete and confused with those of the basilica of St. Peter) and in the Lorsch collection IV (poems 79-82, complete), also called Palatine, from the cod. Vat. Pal. lat. 833, which contains it. They should refer to the church of St. Peter extra moenia of Spoleto, situated on the via Flaminia and built precisely by A. That such a church existed in the 5th century is confirmed for us by some epigraphs of Spoletan bishops of the same century buried there.
Poems 80 and 82 of the Lorsch collection IV (10, incomplete, and 11 of the Centulo collection) treat with notable effectiveness of the Primacy of Peter.
