ACHILLEO, bishop of SPOLETO. — He was chosen by the imperial court of Ravenna in 419 to perform the Paschal functions in Rome, which at that time was without its bishop, since both Boniface I and his rival Eulalius had been driven from it (cf. Avellana Collectio, letters 21, 22 [to A.], 23, 24, 29, 31, 32 of 15, 23, 26, 29 March 419; ed. O. Günther, in CSEL 35, 1, Vienna 1895, pp. 68-71, 74-79).
G. B. De Rossi attributes to him, with good reason, four epigrams preserved, without any topographical indication, in the Centulense epigraphic collection (poems 10-12, incomplete and confused with those of the basilica of St Peter) and in the Laureshamense IV collection (poems 79-82, complete), also called Palatina, from cod. Vat. Pal. lat. 833, which contains II. These should refer to the church of St Peter extra moenia at Spoleto, situated on the via Flaminia and built precisely by A. The existence of this church in the 5th century is confirmed by some inscriptions of bishops of the same century buried there.
Poems 80 and 82 of the Laureshamense IV (10, incomplete, and 11 of the Centulense) treat with notable efficacy of the Primacy of Peter.
