ACHILLA

Also known as: Achillas of Alexandria

ACHILLAS. - Successor of Peter and predecessor of Alexander in the patriarchal see of Alexandria, which he held for a few months between 25 Nov. 311 and June 312. He had previously been head of the famous Alexandrian school. Arius is said to have been ordained priest by him, and for this reason the Copts excluded his name from their calendar, while he was received into the Roman Martyrology on 7 Nov., perhaps because of his opposition to the moral rigorism championed, to the point of schism, by Meletius, bishop of Lycopolis (cf.
