ACHILLAS. – Successor of Peter and predecessor of Alexander in the patriarchal see of Alexandria, which he held for a few months between 25 November 311 and June 312. He had previously been director of the famous Alexandrian school. ARIUS is said to have been ordained priest by him, and for this reason the Copts excluded his name from their calendar, while he was included in the Roman Martyrology on 7 November, perhaps because of his opposition to the moral rigorism, propagated up to the schism, by MELETIUS, bishop of Lycopolis (cf. Martyrologium Romanum, p. 503). Gaetano Corti.
