ACHIA

ACHIA (Heb. 'Abiyyah, "brother of Yahweh"; the name of about 20 persons in the Old Testament, rendered by the Vulgate as Achias or Ahia [v.]; Septuagint: 'Aẓīẓ). - Great-nephew of Eli (v.), through his grandfather Phinehas and his father Ahitub. He was high priest and minister of the ephod, in Saul's war against the Philistines. Saul, wishing to surprise the enemy with 600 men, summoned A. to consult the oracle (I Sam. 14:3-18). While the Masoretic text and the Vulgate have (v. 18): "bring the ark" (the ark was then at Kiriath-jearim, under the watchful guard of the Philistines, cf. v. 3), the true reading is given by the Greek versions: "And Saul said to Ahijah: bring the ephod." In the same book (chaps. 21-22) there is mention of an Ahimelech (v.), a high priest, also a son of Ahitub: it is commonly held that he is the same A.
