ACHIMAAS (Hebrew, probably “brother of the Empire”). – A swift and heroic son of the high priest Zadok. He remained in Jerusalem with his father and, joining Jonathan son of Abiathar, both conveyed from the spring of Rogel to David, who had fled before the rebel Absalom, the news that their fathers learned in the city. When discovered and pursued, they hid in a cistern at Bahurim; then they reached David, to whom they reported the treacherous counsel of the traitor Ahithophel (v.) and the warning from their parents to cross the Jordan at once (2 Sam 15:27–36; 17:17–20). Fighting among David’s troops, Achimaas, being very swift, brought the king the news of victory over the rebels, but left to the messenger who had outrun him the ungrateful task of announcing Absalom’s death (ibid. 18:19–31). Many hold that the Achimaas of 1 Kings 4:7–15, an officer over the levy in Naphtali and son-in-law of Solomon, is the same person.
