ACHIMAAS (Heb., probably “brother of the empire”). – The exceedingly swift and heroic son of the high priest Sadac. He remained with his father in Jerusalem and joined with Cionata, son of Abiathar; from the spring of Rogel, the two of them sent David, who had fled before the rebel Absalom, the news that their fathers learned in the city. Discovered and pursued, they managed to hide in a cistern at Bahurin; they then reached David, to whom they reported the Achitofel (v.), and their parents’ warning to cross the Jordan immediately (II Sam. 15:27–36; 17:17–20). Fighting among David’s troops, A., who was exceedingly swift, brought the king news of the victory over the rebels, but left to the Cushite messenger, whom he had outrun, the thankless task of informing him of Absalom’s death (ibid. 18:19–31). Many hold that the A. of I Reg. 4:7–15, an official responsible for taxation in Nephtali and Solomon’s son-in-law, is our A.
