EUSEBIUS, Pope, Saint. - Cubiculum where Pope E. was laid (4th century) with the fragments of the Damasian field - Rome, cemetery of St. Callistus.
EUSEBIUS, POPE, saint. - He was elected as the successor of Marcellus (309-10?) when the latter was driven from Rome by order of Maxentius, because he was responsible for the disorders stirred up by the lapsi who wanted to be readmitted into the community without submitting to canonical penance.
From the inscription that Pope Damasus dedicated to E., it is known that the conflicts stirred up under Marcellus continued also under E., especially when the party hostile to penance set up against him a rival named Heraclius. The disorder was complete, since it was aggravated by the schism. After four months of this unbearable situation, the civil authority intervened again: the two leaders were arrested and driven into exile. E. was sent to Sicily, where he died shortly afterward. His body, however, was brought to Rome and buried in the cemetery of Callistus. Feast on September 26.
