EUSEBIO, POPE, saint. — He was elected as successor to Marcello (309–10?) when the latter was driven from Rome by order of Massenzio, because he was held responsible for the disturbances stirred up by the Iapsi, who wished to be readmitted to the community without submitting to canonical penance.
From the inscription which Pope Damaso dedicated to E., it is known that the conflicts provoked under Marcello continued under E. as well, especially when the party hostile to penance set up against him a rival named Ensilio. Disorder was complete, being aggravated by schism. After four months of this intolerable situation, the civil authority intervened again: the two leaders were arrested and sent into exile. E. was sent to Sicily, where he died shortly afterwards. His body, however, was brought to Rome and buried in the cemetery of Callisto. Feast day: 26 September.
